“Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”. Since today is “St. Nicholas Day”…a little about the man behind the legend. Nicholas was born in 270, entered the priesthood and became the Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (Turkey). Miracles associated with his prayers later elevated him to Catholic sainthood and his secret gift-giving gave rise to who we now know as “Santa Claus”.
But there is more to the story. In 325, Nicholas was invited to attend the First Council of Nicea…think “Nicene Creed”. “Is the Son really God?” was the debate. Is the Son eternal or did he come into being at the Incarnation? “Begotten, not made” was how they finally worded it deciding for eternal (thankfully for all of us they got it right). Legend has it that the argument got so heated that Arius, who proposed that the Son was created by the Father was actually slugged in the face…by Nicholas! It makes me chuckle when I sing “Santa Claus is coming to town”. You better BE good!
