Michael’s Missive January 10

January 10, 2018

First Pres Community –

“Januweary.”  It’s my new word…and I think it fits.  Christmas is over.  The Chiefs losing leaves everyone disappointed.  Cloudy, damp, cold weather is making people irritable.  Black ice makes people anxious, travels dangerous and everything iffy.  We are all weary of Januweary.

“A weary world rejoices” is a phase from “O Holy Night” that hangs in my office.  I like it.  It reminds me of why Christ came.  Not to rescue us from weather weariness but to save us from world weariness, life weariness, soul weariness.  The weather will change eventually.  Our world, our life, our soul will not – apart from God’s intervention and help offered in Christ.

“This is why I came” is part of Mark 1 that we will hear THIS SUNDAY as we continue our series through Mark.  It will be a special time as we share in the Ordination and Installation of Elders at both the 9am and 11am services.  At 10am, during our Faith and Fellowship Time, Sunday School for all ages is held.  For adults, “When Christians Get It Wrong” in the Center Room, “The Reformations” in the Library, and the Men’s Study tba.  The Women’s Bible Study on Friday morning is studying “12 Women of the Bible”.  Newcomers always welcome.

(If you are interested in starting a new class, please see me.  With Holly’s change in job description, I now have the responsibility in this area.)

BOTH Worship Services are now “live-streamed”…access from our website.  This is a great option for those housebound.  Sermons are also posted on Facebook.

TONIGHT – Logos and Youth Group at 5:30pm.  Then Bells at 6:30 and Choir at 7:30.

TOMORROW – Keenagers postponed.  Be safe.

SNOW POLICY – We follow the Lee’s Summit School District calendar for our children and youth programs.  We hold activities when they hold school…and we cancel when they cancel or have early release due to inclement weather.  As for church closings or weekend cancellations, watch your local news for “Church Closings” on KMBC (we will contact them).  One station is more reliable than trying to contact all since there are so many and they all have different procedures.  We will try to give an all-call if possible.

THIS SATURDAY – Men’s Group Breakfast now begins at 7:45am.  At 10am this Saturday, Phil Hansen from Truman Heartland Community Foundation will be at our Church at the request of our Finance Action Team to talk about our endowment and investments.  Everyone is welcome at both of these gatherings.

THIS MONDAY is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  The church office will be closed.  An observance will be held at 6pm in the Pavilion.  Youth are off tubing with Heartland Presbytery.

Your pastor and friend  Michael

Ps – Since some are asking…I didn’t fall on my face.  Every January I treat my face with a cream that is supposed to burn off bad (precancerous) skin…another reason I am Januweary.
