Born near Ft. Benning, GA, our family of 5 soon moved to Charlotte, NC. I had a wonderful childhood there where we were actively involved in Steele Creek Pres. At age 10 we moved to Santa Clara, CA. My world opened up. Junior High was in Salt Lake City, UT (where I was baptized) and High School was in Mercer Island (Seattle), WA. Though we attended church, it was not until a camp run by Young Life that the reality of God got through to me. I was discipled through Young Life and became a leader with them.
From Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR, I earned a BS in Psychology. Summers were spent working in an automotive plant in Atlanta, GA, where my parents had moved. Nothing motivates one to be studious like manual labor! I was asked to consider Seminary because of my involvement in campus ministry.
At San Francisco Theological Seminary in CA, I came to appreciate the diversity within Christianity and fell in love with “church” at Community Pres. in Vallejo. My faith broadened and deepened. My internship at Bel Air Pres. in Los Angeles exposed me to an alive, powerful, and huge church. Prior to my last year at SFTS, I married a Christian sister from my high school years.
Upon graduation, I was ordained and installed as Minister to Students at Valley Pres. in Portland, OR. I struggled and discovered that God had called me to preach and pastor. I took a call to Mt. Scott Pres. in southeast Portland for 6 years then a call to Hillsboro Pres. (a suburb of Portland) for 27 years. There I planted roots – raised my family and flourished as a pastor. Along the way, I – rebuilt (and designed) a church facility after a fire, led the local Ministerial Association (50+ churches), earned my D.Min. from Western Seminary in Portland, served on Boards for Hospice and Presbytery Trustees, was active in the local community, and grew a vibrant church family of faith, hope, and love.
Sadly, when our nest was empty, our marriage ended. Gladly, after several years of living on my own, God gave me a wonderful wife and life partner in Carolyn. We have had 9 great years together. We love time with family and friends, traveling, soccer, and Jayhawk basketball. Between us, we have 3 children. Jonathan resides in Shanghai, China. Stephanie (married to Judd) is raising our grandson Asher in Denver. And Corbin is a student at Oregon State. We are excited to begin a new chapter in our life together.
I am blessed that my vocation is my avocation. I love God and love people. I workout daily, enjoy most sports, enjoy being active, enjoy reading and doing puzzles, enjoy time with my wife, appreciate what I have and have accomplished, and know Jesus has lots more in store in this life adventure.
