Michael’s Missives for September 25, 2019

First Pres Community –

Happy Fall.  (Biblically, that can sound like an oxymoron).  Everything is kicking into gear here at church…including a new ministry that I am excited to tell you about.

Beginning Sunday, October 20, First Pres will host a free monthly medical clinic on the 3rd Sunday of every month from 1-5pm.  Pax Community Health (formerly New Springs Community Clinic is moving the ministry they have been providing to the greater Lee’s Summit community for the past 2 years to our facility.  Dr. Laura Voss is the Medical Director and the onsite Doctor.  Rosemary Stefenelli, of our congregation, has agreed to serve as the volunteer coordinator.  The clinic will be operated out of Rooms 111+113 downstairs by the Gym, the large classroom used for last year’s confirmation class.  Those seeking medical care (uninsured, insured, it doesn’t matter) will be met by one of our volunteers at the front door where they will be directed downstairs and met by another volunteer.  The gathering space downstairs is where they check in and wait to be seen. No drugs are kept on the premises.  Few, if any, other programs at the church will be affected by this new ministry here.  Session unanimously approved our hosting and involvement with this clinic.  Our insurance company is onboard.  We have been working on this for several months, so I am glad to be at this point and to share it with you.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Rosemary.  There will be an interview, background check, and screening process involved.  (Be forewarned that you may miss some Sunday afternoon Chiefs games if you do volunteer.)

TONIGHT, LOGOS and youth parents are asked to attend an information night at 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall.  (LOGOS and Youth Group will return next Wednesday, October 2nd.

Also tonight, Bells at 6:30pm and Choir at 7:30pm.

THIS SUNDAY, the sermon at both the 9am and 11am services will be “True Riches, Real Life“.  At 10am is our Faith and Fellowship Hour.  Nursery care is provided all morning.

In addition to the classes for children and youth during the 10am hour which are downstairs, there are 5 adult classes.

1-The Value of Doubt by Bill Tammeus led by Nancy Tapp in the Center Room (downstairs).

2-Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life by Tish Harrison led by Ann Ditty and Barbara Muckey (Women’s Discussion Group) in the Lounge (upstairs).

3-Man to Man by Charles Swindoll (Men’s Group) in Room 118 (downstairs).

4-Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism by John Shelby Spong led by Stan Howell in the Library/Resource Room (downstairs).

5-Unshakeable Hope: building Our Lives on the Promises of God by Max Lucado led by Courtney Williams (contemporaries) at the end of the CE wing (downstairs).

Lastly, I asked you to pray regarding a picket by Westboro Baptist Church at LS High last week.  In this case, no news coverage is good news as they did not get the coverage they sought.  So, thank you.  Prayer does make a difference.  Please continue to lift up those listed below in your daily prayers.

See you Sunday!

In the faith, hope, and love of Jesus –

Your pastor and friend  Michael
