Michael’s Missives for October 9, 2019

First Pres Community –

3 big events that I want to highlight…and a bunch of other info.

RISE AGAINST HUNGER is Saturday, October 19, at 11am.  You may still sign-up, show-up, and give. Rise Against Hunger, formerly Stop Hunger Now, is an international hunger relief agency that seeks to end global hunger by engaging local volunteers. The non-profit organization was formed in 1998 by Ray Buchanan, a United Methodist Minister, and began its meal packaging program in 2005. The organizational mission is stated as “Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Its mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.”  Currently 821 million people across the world don’t receive enough nutrition to lead an active, healthy life…most are children.  Last year, Rise Against Hunger impacted 1.4 million lives through meals and other aid.  We will be filling bags with a soy and bean mixture sufficient for 10,000 meals, then boxing for shipping.  It should take us 60-90 minutes.  70 of you have signed up to help…would love to see 100 of you.  All ages and all abilities can participate.

PLEDGE SUNDAY is Sunday, October 20.  There will be an opportunity for you to bring your 2020 Pledges forward at both the 9am and 11am Worship Services.  Stewardship letters with pledge cards were mailed yesterday.  If you forget your pledge cards or did not receive one in the mail, extras are in our Narthex.  This is an opportunity to give in thanks to God and to support the ongoing ministry of your church.  This year’s theme: “FAITHFUL – with little, with much, with all” recognizes that God has entrusted us with everything we have.  May we be faithful as we give back in gratitude to God.

TRUNK OR TREAT & CHILI COOK-OFF is Sunday, October 27.  We need trunks!  It’s not hard, just decorate yours and add some candy.  We need cooks for the cook-off!  Just make a pot and bring it.  Sign-ups for both are in the Narthex.  The Trunk or Treat will be from 4-5pm.  The Chili Cookoff will be from 5-6pm.  (Chiefs play at 7:20pm.)   If you are bringing chili, do so at 4…judging will be at 4:30.  EVERYONE:  Wear a costume; if you can, decorate your car or make chili; and come join the fun!  Suggested donation: $3/person or $10/family.  Toilet paper donations for John Calvin Manor will be received.  Remember to invite children, families, and friends.  Awards for costumes, trunks, and chilis.  Again, a great event for all ages.

THIS SUNDAY, the sermon at both the 9am and 11am services will be “Created to Praise“.  At 10am is our Faith and Fellowship Hour.  Nursery care is provided all morning.

TONIGHT, Logos from 5:30-7:30pm.  Youth Group, 6:30-7:30pm.  Bells at 6:30pm and Choir at 7:30pm.

TOMORROW, Keenagers off to FPC Topeka at 10:30am to view the Tiffany stained glass windows and to eat lunch at The Pennant.  (That church’s Pastor, the Rev. Sandra Brown, was our Associate Pastor for a number of years.)

SATURDAY, Men’s Group at 7:450am.  All men welcome.

Looking ahead: Our first day of hosting a free medical clinic, Pax Community Health, will be Sunday, October 20, 1-5pm.  It will be offered on the 3rd Sunday of each month at that time.

See you this Sunday…if not before.  Have a blessed day.

In the faith, hope, and love of Jesus –

Your pastor and friend  Michael

P.S. – I am off to Denver to see the grandkids for a few days next week and to celebrate a 7 year olds birthday.  I will be working from there.  If you need pastoral assistance while I am gone, contact our Stephen Leader’s John Fields or Sharon Pyburn.  No Missive, but I will be back in the pulpit on Sunday the 20th!
