First Pres Community –

Welcome to Advent.

During this time of preparing for the Birth of Christ, many people undertake Advent readings or Advent activities to help them prepare.  You may have already begun something, if so, great; if not, here are some ideas.  One) read a chapter of the Gospel of Luke every day (24 chapters) …so 12/1-12/24 will take you through entire life of Christ as you prepare for his birth.  Two) use the online devotional “Follow the Star” at d365.org.  Three) follow a Kindness Calendar with activities, like these: Support a charity, cause or campaign you really care about; Give kind comments to as many people as possible today; Listen wholeheartedly to others without judging them; Leave a positive message for someone else to find; Notice when you’re hard on yourself or others and be kind instead; Make gifts to give to people who are homeless or feeling lonely; Do something helpful for a friend or family member; Be generous. Feed someone with food, love or kindness today; Count your blessings list the kind things others have done for you; Give someone your place in a queue (in traffic or in a shop); See how many different people you can smile at today; Buy some extra items and donate them to a local food bank; Share a happy memory or inspiring thought with a loved one; Visit an elderly neighbor and brighten up their day; Look for something positive to say to everyone you meet today; Thank people who do things for you but you may take for granted; Offer to help someone who is facing difficulties at the moment; Give away something that you have been holding on to; Congratulate someone for an achievement that may go unnoticed; Shop locally and support independent producers; Invite over someone who would otherwise be alone; Choose to give or receive the gift of forgiveness; Offer spontaneous hugs to your loved ones and friends.

Throughout Advent, every Sunday will have a different theme…plus there are services and activities, opportunities to serve and give…all to help you prepare for Christ’s Birth.  All of these welcome your participation.
