January 8, 2020
First Pres Community –
- Hard to believe. Like the year 2000, it always seemed so far in the future…now it’s here. What will it hold? God only knows…but it is certainly a call to be a people of prayer.
My daily prayers right now include: prayer for the people and the fires in Australia; prayer for peace and de-escalation in Iran and North Korea; prayer for violence to cease in our schools and houses of worship; prayer for the Kurds and all persecuted for their faith; prayer for the homeless and the hungry; prayer for the children separated from their families; prayer for the divisions that separate our nation and world; prayer for all I failed to mention; prayer for God’s help in all of it…including using me and us as God’s Spirit prompts to give and to serve.
I find it helpful to always remember Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Using this verse from God’s Word, our Outreach Action Team has challenged our congregation to be united in prayer in 2020…united in praying a common prayer at the same time every day. They have called it the “1857 Breakthrough Prayer”, to be prayed every evening at 6:57pm (or 18:57)…or 6:57am if you so choose, and it goes like this:
Lord God, make known to us Your plans for our church and for us as individuals. Open our minds and encourage our hearts to live out those plans and to live into Your future. Through the power of Your Spirit, to Your glory, and in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
May 2020 be blessed in surprising and wonderful ways.
Now to this week here at First Pres…
TONIGHT – Wednesday evening activities resume with Logos, 5:30-7:30pm; Youth Group, 6:30-7:30pm; Bells at 6:30pm and Choir at 7:30pm.
SATURDAY – Men’s Breakfast at 7:45am.
This weekend…chance of snow and ice…so Saturday and Sunday might be iffy, but who knows. For Sunday, watch your local news for “Church Closings” on KMBC (we will contact them). One station is more reliable than trying to contact all since there are so many and they all have different procedures (logins, passwords, etc.). Hopefully we can also put it on our website and Facebook. The main guideline is BE SAFE. If we do worship and you are not here, you may stream the service through our church website. Also, during the week, the church office closes when LS schools close…and our activities get cancelled as well.
Apparently the Chiefs are hot because it warms up again on Sunday afternoon!
THIS SUNDAY – weather permitting – the sermon at both the 9am & 11am service will be “Personhood and Purpose” as we consider baptism as an ordaining for service of all of us. New Elders will be ordained and Installed at both services. During the 10am Faith and Fellowship time, all classes for all ages resume…including 5 adult classes. Nursery care is provided all morning. Also on Sunday, our Youth will continue to take Super Bowl Sunday orders for pulled pork sandwiches ($5) and slabs of ribs ($15).
In the faith, hope, and love of Jesus –
Your pastor and friend Michael
